Coming up this week on Friday Night Live will be the first broadcast of the Red Belly Black Cafe Duo Jazz Series. This local concert recorded by ArtSound FM will feature Paul Cutlan on Clarinet and Sax and Alister Spence on Piano. The series, recorded in 2004, showcases some of Australia’s best jazz musicians in the unique format of duo performance. Paul and Alistair will perform a program of jazz standards and originals.
Paul Cutlan focuses his energies in original music projects invovling creative musicians, especially involving improvisation. He started out as freelancer with classical and jazz orchestras as a clarinet player playing with such diverse groups as Ten Part Invention, James Morrison Quintet, Judy Bailey, Steve Hunters’ Nine Lives, Clarion Fracture Zone and Wanderlust. Today his time is split between projects including Duo Simpatico with Andrew Robson, Coltrane Project and the stage work Birth of the Cool, which presents the lives and times of the beat generation of poets with John Turnbull.
Alister Spence is a renowned Australian pianist and composer. His trio play regularly around Sydney and have added a great deal to what is now a strong modern Australian Jazz scene. There latest CD, Flux (following their debut recording Three’s A Circle) is ’unhurried and poignant in its delivery, this performance has the hallmark of artists who, through years of study and unfailing commitment to their craft, have arrived at a point where they can communicate confidently and succinctly without hindrance from things such as technique and a desire to impress’ - SIMA
Friday Night Live features live performances from the ArtSound recording studios and pre-recorded concerts from venues around the Canberra region including the Gods Cafe, Canberra Southern Cross Club, the Street Theatre as well as some of the world’s top festivals.
