‘Bluebird’ takes off on ArtSound FM

krista-schmeling-sm.jpg

Friday night is set for a revamp with the broadcast of our new Roots and Acoustic program on Friday nights from 10pm to midnight. Bluebird, presented by long-time ArtSound FM presenter Krista Schmeling, will include a mixture of 30’s and 40’s American delta blues and modern musicians inspired by it.

Tune in to hear Appalachian and old-time country music and it’s evolved, modern-day counterparts that fall into the folk or alternative country genres. Featured will be acoustic and roots musicians from the local area as well as artists from around the world.

Krista Schmeling co-presented Route 927 with Libby O’Loghlin on ArtSound in 2006, and has been a fan of community radio for many years. She has always had a soft spot for beautiful harmonies, and has sung in a few groups in Canberra over the years including the Worldly Goods a Capella choir and the Honeybells. Her concept for creating Bluebird came out of the idea to have a mix of music that pays homage to some very soulful old sounds, from syncopated African-derived rhythms and beautiful harmonies to more modern sounds of today. Including incorporating some of those original and innovative-for-their-time ideas found in roots music that have been taken to another level.

Artists featured on Bluebird: Bessie Smith, The Carter Family, Leadbelly, The Beautiful Girls, Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper, Jolie Holland, Gillian Welch, Chris Smither, Ry Cooder, Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Sufjan Stevens, The Waifs, The Cashews, The Saltwater Band, Miriam Makeba, Ali Farkah Toureh.

  2. Hi Krista,

This sounds cool. As a blues musician I wish you all the best with it. Of course I’ll also be submitting for your playlist.

  3. Thanks for your comments Tanya and CJ.

I’d love to hear what people think about the show, so feel free to leave comments here or send them to the onair e-mail address at Artsound.

I would also love to hear from more local Canberra and Australian roots, acoustic, blues and folk artists – there’s lots of great music out there waiting to be heard! If you send CD’s to Artsound c/o me (see the website for the address), I’ll be able to have a listen before they go into the Artsound library.

Hope you’re enjoying the music on Bluebird!

    Krista

  4. I bet Bluebird is a wonderful radio show, and I wish I could hear it-

is there streaming or a podcast available?

at the very least, I hope you’ll dust off your copy of “Motoring With the Dixons” and play your favorite track

  5. Thanks Bettina,

I’m hoping that podcasting (or atleast streaming) is not far off for Bluebird. I would love for you to hear it. We’ll be working on that here at Artsound.

Meanwhile, I’ll have a look for my old Trixie Dixon albums!

Great show! Where else but Artsound will you hear music like this?

    Any chance of a playlist?

    Regards

  7. Hi Des,

Thanks for your comments. Just let me know which week’s playlist you would like and where to send it.

Hope to have playlists published regularly eventually.

    Thanks for listening!

    Cheers,
    Krista
